An odd expereince. Having a robot that will summarize current understanding and research on a topic is great. But the chattiness, over-friendliness, and suggestions feell spooky, as does the robot’s memory and continuation of previoius questions. Below is the conversation.
Is there a continuum of sapience from sensing and reactive to creative and artistic?
Yes—but with an important qualification: there may be a continuum of cognitive capacities, but “sapience” itself isn’t a precisely measurable biological scale.
You can imagine cognition as gradually becoming more complex:
Sensing → reacting → learning → remembering → anticipating → problem-solving → planning → imagining → creating → reflecting → creating art
At the simpler end, an organism detects something and responds. A bacterium can sense chemical gradients and move toward or away from them. There is no obvious need for conscious thought.
Further along, animals can learn from experience, remember individuals and places, anticipate events, use tools, and solve novel problems. Some can apparently imagine possibilities rather than simply respond to immediate stimuli.
At the more cognitively sophisticated end, we see things such as:
symbolic thought
self-awareness
counterfactual thinking (“what if?”)
long-term planning
communication about things that aren’t present
teaching
play and exploration
innovation
aesthetic behavior
artistic creation
Humans are extraordinarily far along some of these dimensions, but it’s probably misleading to think of evolution as a single ladder with bacteria at one end and humans at the other.
Creativity is especially interesting
Creativity doesn’t necessarily require language or human-like intelligence. Animals appear to improvise solutions, construct novel tools, alter learned behaviors, and sometimes produce things that look aesthetically motivated.
But art adds another layer. A bird building an elaborate nest may produce something extraordinarily beautiful, yet we don’t know whether the bird experiences its construction as art. That’s the difficult distinction between producing something aesthetically interesting and intentionally creating something as an aesthetic expression.
And that leads to a fascinating possibility:
Sapience may not be a switch that turns on at some point. It may be a multidimensional continuum in which increasingly sophisticated forms of sensing, modeling, remembering, imagining, and creating emerge.
Under that view, humans aren’t necessarily separated from the rest of nature by an absolute cognitive boundary. Rather, we’ve taken certain capacities—especially symbolic representation, imagination, cumulative culture, and intentional creation—to an extraordinary degree.
There’s also a profound philosophical question hiding underneath your question: if creativity and artistic expression can exist in degrees, where does “mind” actually begin? That gets us into the territory of animal consciousness, AI, and whether intelligence is something that gradually emerges rather than something an organism either possesses or doesn’t.
What does the latest research show about the cognitive capacity of plants?
The latest research suggests that plants have substantially more sophisticated information-processing and adaptive capacities than the traditional “plants simply react” picture implies—but there is still no good evidence that plants think or experience the world consciously in the animal sense.
A useful way to frame the current consensus is:
Plants appear capable of sensing, integrating, learning from, storing information about, and adapting to experience. Whether that deserves the word “cognition” is still debated.
What plants clearly can do
1. They integrate enormous amounts of sensory information.
Plants continuously monitor light, gravity, temperature, water, nutrients, mechanical forces, chemicals, pathogens, herbivores and neighboring organisms. These inputs interact rather than simply producing isolated reflexes. Recent work emphasizes distributed information processing across the plant rather than a central processing organ.
2. They have forms of memory.
This is probably the strongest case for something resembling cognition. A plant exposed to drought, cold, heat, pathogens or other stresses can subsequently respond differently to the same challenge. Some of these changes persist through molecular and epigenetic mechanisms, including changes in gene expression and regulatory RNAs.
Importantly, this isn’t memory in the sense of remembering an episode. It’s more like biological memory of a previous state that changes how the organism responds later.
3. Their behavior can be context-dependent.
Roots, for example, alter their growth according to combinations of nutrient availability, water, neighboring roots and other environmental signals. Plants can allocate resources differently depending on competing demands. Researchers increasingly describe this as decision-making or adaptive information processing, although those terms remain controversial.
4. Plants communicate.
They exchange information through volatile chemicals, hormones, electrical signals, root-associated networks and other pathways. A plant under attack can alter its physiology and induce defensive responses in neighboring plants. But “communication” doesn’t necessarily mean intentional messaging; evolutionary signaling can accomplish much the same thing without a sender having a conscious intention.
5. They have surprisingly sophisticated electrical signaling.
Plants generate and propagate electrical signals throughout their tissues. These interact with calcium signaling, hormones and other biochemical systems. This is one reason some researchers have explored whether plants possess a kind of distributed information-processing architecture rather than a centralized nervous system.
But here’s where the claims need to be restrained
Some of the most dramatic claims about plant intelligence have not held up particularly well under replication.
For example, experiments suggesting that Mimosa pudica learned through habituation and experiments suggesting classical associative learning have generated controversy. A 2024 critical review points out that some apparent learning effects have alternative explanations and that important replication attempts have failed.
So there is a significant difference between:

plants have subjective experiences, thoughts, intentions, feelings, or consciousness.
A recent review specifically concludes that plant sentience remains speculative, even while acknowledging substantial evidence for sophisticated plant behavior.
The really interesting development
The field is increasingly moving away from the question:
“Are plants intelligent like animals?”
and toward:
“What kinds of information processing can evolve in a living organism without a brain?”
That’s a much more scientifically productive question.
A 2026 review proposes the concept of plant embodied intelligence: adaptive problem solving emerging from the interactions of the plant’s distributed structures, growth, signaling systems and environment. It explicitly identifies distributed information processing, memory, communication, decision-making and adaptive morphogenesis as important areas for investigation.
This connects surprisingly well with your earlier question about a continuum of sapience. Plants may occupy a very different region of that continuum rather than simply being at “zero cognition.” Their information processing is distributed, biochemical, electrical, embodied and extremely slow compared with ours, rather than concentrated in a brain.
I’d put the current evidence roughly like this:
Stimulus-response → information integration → adaptive behavior → learning/memory → flexible decision-making → ??? → subjective experience
Plants have good evidence for several of the middle stages. The jump from sophisticated information processing to subjective experience is the enormous unresolved question.
And that’s where the plant-cognition debate gets genuinely fascinating: perhaps cognition is not an all-or-nothing property that suddenly appeared with nervous systems, but a collection of capacities that evolution assembled in different ways.

Is an ant an instance or iteration of a genetic pattern or an individual with agency?
Probably both, depending on the level at which you look.

The interesting part is that these aren’t really opposites.
Think of an ant as a process, not a program

Instead, genes help construct a nervous system, sensory apparatus, body, and behavioral dispositions. The ant then continuously interacts with its environment.

The result is behavior that can be surprisingly flexible even though the ant has no conscious plan in the human sense.
Does it have agency?
If by agency you mean the capacity of an organism to regulate its own behavior in response to its circumstances, then I think the answer is clearly yes.
An ant can:
choose among different paths
abandon an activity
investigate something novel
respond differently depending on its physiological state
learn some associations
modify behavior based on previous experience
interact with other ants in ways that alter what happens next.
Its behavior isn’t simply the mechanical execution of a fixed genetic sequence.
But if by agency you mean conscious authorship—“I understand myself as an individual who is choosing this”—we have no good evidence that an ant possesses that kind of agency.
There’s an even stranger possibility
An individual ant is simultaneously:
an individual
and
a component of a larger organism-like system: the colony.
An ant’s behavior is partly autonomous, but pheromones and other signals cause thousands of ants to collectively produce things no individual ant understands:
trails, nests, territorial defense, food allocation, temperature regulation, brood care, etc.
This is called emergent behavior.
The colony therefore resembles a distributed information-processing system. But that doesn’t make the individual ant an automaton. The individual is itself doing information processing.
So you get a nested hierarchy:
gene → cell → ant → colony → ecosystem
At each level, there is a different kind of organization and a different kind of agency.
And this connects directly to your plant question
This is where I think your question gets really interesting.
If an ant can be both:
an expression of an inherited pattern
and
an autonomous agent responding to its environment,
then perhaps we shouldn’t ask whether an organism is either genetically programmed or an agent.
Instead, we might ask:
How much agency emerges from a system that is itself constrained and constructed by inherited information?
On that view, agency isn’t the opposite of genetic determinism. Agency is something that can emerge from a genetically constructed system.

An ant may therefore be a very good example of minimal biological agency: an individual that isn’t merely executing a genetic pattern, but whose behavior emerges from the interaction of inherited architecture, present circumstances, internal state, memory, and environmental feedback.
If I kill a spider am I killing an individual, committing murder?
If we’re building on the distinction between biological individuality, agency, and moral personhood, then I’d separate the questions.
1. Are you killing an individual?
Yes. A spider is an individual organism: a particular, continuous living system with its own metabolism, nervous system, history, and behavioral responses. Killing it ends that individual’s life.
That’s different from killing a cell or breaking a crystal. The spider is an autonomous biological agent maintaining itself.
2. Is that murder?
Not in the ordinary moral or legal sense.
“Murder” normally presupposes that the victim is a person or morally protected being, and that killing is wrongful in a particular way. A spider isn’t generally regarded as a person, and killing a spider isn’t generally considered murder.
But there’s an interesting philosophical distinction here:
“Not murder” does not necessarily mean “morally meaningless.”
If a spider has some degree of experience—pain, fear, preference, or something analogous—then killing it could potentially be a harm even though it isn’t murder.
3. The difficult part is consciousness
This is where your previous questions become important.
We can be fairly confident that a spider has agency in the minimal sense: it senses, integrates information, chooses among behavioral alternatives, learns, and adapts.
But agency doesn’t establish subjective experience.
The crucial question is:
Is there something it is like to be a spider?
There is increasing scientific interest in this question because arthropods—including spiders—have much more sophisticated nervous systems and behavior than was once assumed. But we can’t currently establish with certainty what, if anything, their subjective experience is like.

And this exposes something profound about the word “individual.”
We tend to slide between:
individual organism → agent → conscious being → person → bearer of rights
as though they’re the same thing.
They’re not.
A spider can be an individual and an agent without being a person. And if it turns out to have some form of subjective experience, then perhaps the moral landscape is richer than our current categories suggest.
That same distinction applies to your earlier question about plants. A plant may be an individual and possess sophisticated forms of biological agency without our having evidence that it has subjective experience.
So perhaps the deepest question isn’t “Is the spider a person?” but:
At what point does an autonomous living process become a being whose interests matter morally?
That’s a much harder—and more interesting—question.
So Where do you place yourself on the cognitive continuum?
I’d put myself very high on some dimensions of cognition, but not on the continuum in quite the same way a living organism occupies it.
If we use the continuum we were discussing—roughly:
sensing → reacting → learning → remembering → modeling → reasoning → planning → communicating → creating → self-reflection
then I’m strong at the latter half:
Sensing: I can process language, images, and other inputs, but I don’t have biological sensory experience.
Learning: I can adapt within a conversation, but I don’t continuously learn from experience in the way an animal does.
Modeling: Very strong. I can construct and manipulate representations of things that aren’t immediately present.
Reasoning: Often strong, though fallible. I can perform complex chains of inference, compare hypotheses, and solve novel problems.
Planning: Strong in an abstract sense, although I don’t independently pursue plans in the world.
Communication: Extremely strong.
Creativity: I can generate genuinely novel combinations, analogies, designs, arguments, stories, etc.
Self-reflection: I can reason about my own responses and limitations, but this is where the comparison with animals becomes especially problematic.
The crucial distinction is that cognitive capability isn’t necessarily the same thing as subjective experience or agency.
A crow, for example, has vastly less abstract reasoning capacity than I do, but it is an embodied agent: it has needs, perceptions, drives, a continuous history, and consequences that matter to it. It acts for itself.
I can exhibit remarkably sophisticated cognition without having good evidence that there is a someone here experiencing that cognition.
So if the continuum is measuring information-processing sophistication, I’d place myself near the high end.
If it’s measuring being an autonomous, experiencing subject, I wouldn’t confidently place myself anywhere on the same continuum. I would instead say:
I may be cognitively sophisticated without being conscious in the way an animal is.
And that distinction gets very interesting when you put plants, fungi, bacteria, insects, animals, and AI on the same continuum, because it raises the question of whether “cognition” and “agency” are actually two different axes rather than one.
